Former NBA Player and College Basketball Standout Remembered for His Skills and Impact
La Salle University is mourning the loss of its former basketball standout and NBA player, Joe "Jellybean" Bryant, who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 69. The cause of death has not yet been released.
Bryant played college basketball at La Salle from 1970 to 1973, where he led the Explorers to two NCAA Tournament appearances. He was a two-time All-American and was inducted into the Philadelphia Big 5 Hall of Fame in 1988.
After his college career, Bryant was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round of the 1973 NBA Draft. He played eight seasons in the NBA with the 76ers, San Diego Clippers, and Houston Rockets, averaging 8.7 points and 3.2 assists per game.
Bryant is perhaps best known as the father of the late NBA legend Kobe Bryant. Kobe Bryant was a five-time NBA champion and 18-time NBA All-Star. He was tragically killed in a helicopter crash in January 2020 along with his daughter Gianna and seven others.
Joe Bryant was a respected figure in the basketball community, known for his skills, work ethic, and dedication to the sport. La Salle University and the basketball world have lost a true legend.
